EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a synthetic rubber single-ply membrane and one of the longest-standing commercial roofing systems in use — it has been installed on commercial low-slope roofs since the 1960s, giving it a field-proven track record that newer membranes have not yet had time to build.
Where EPDM Outperforms Other Membranes
EPDM’s defining strength is flexibility. The membrane handles thermal expansion and contraction, building movement, and cold-weather stiffening better than most single-ply alternatives, which is why it has historically been the preferred choice in colder, more variable climates where a roof goes through significant temperature swings across the year.
Unlike TPO and PVC, which are heat-welded at the seams, EPDM is most commonly seamed with adhesive tape or liquid adhesive (fully-adhered, mechanically-fastened, or ballasted installation methods are all common). Seam quality has historically been the membrane’s most cited weak point relative to heat-welded systems — a seam is only as good as its installation — but modern seam tape technology has significantly closed that gap, and EPDM’s long track record means its long-term failure modes are well understood by contractors and manufacturers alike.

- Retrofits or recover projects over an existing EPDM roof
- Projects prioritizing a long, well-documented field track record over newer membrane technology
